GOLGI  APPARATUS

  1. It is a complex cyctoplasmic structure made up of smooth membrane saccules or cisternae, a network of tubules with vessicles and vacuoles, which take part in membrane transformation, secretion & production of complex biomolecules.
  2. It is also known as Dalton complex, Golgi complex, Lipochondrion (rich in lipids), Baker's body, Idiosome, Dictyosome (plant golgi body), Trophospongium, Traffic police of the cell, Principal director of the macro molecules.
  3. Golgi body first observed by L.S. George.
  4. Discovered by Camillo Golgi (1898) - Italian neurologist in nerve cells of cat and barn owl. He called it "internal reticular apparatus".
  5. Baker first stained them by Sudan black and indicated their importance in secretion.
  6. Hierch (1939) prepared a list of 150 names of Golgi body.
  7. Golgi in plants is known as lipochondrion.
  8. Golgi body presents in all eukaryotes but absent in mature RBCs of mammals, sieve tubes, bryophytes etc.
  9. Its structure was studied under electron microscope by Dalton & Felix (1954).

  1. Number of Golgi body = One to many in a cell located near nucleus.
  2. Maximum number of golgi body present in rhizodial cells of chara (green algae = 25,000).
