Gel shift assay is a technique by which one can determine whether a particular protein preparation contains factors which bind to the specific DNA fragment. At times when a radiolabeled DNA fragment is run on the gel, it shows the characteristic mobility. If it is first incubated with the help of cellular extract of proteins (or with the purified protein), any protein-DNA complexes will migrate from one place to another slowly than the naked DNA - a shifted band.
