Dr. Atkins claims that those who follow his diet will "fly high" emotionally when CHO are removed from the diet completely during the first week. He claims they will be "fit and flat" because they consume protein in large quantities, and he claims that carbs are "poisonous" to the body. What do you know from our studies thus far that you could use to defend the traditional balanced, moderate-carbohydrate diet in the face of supporters of the Atkins diet? (That is, if you remove most of the glucose from your diet, and consume primarily protein and fat, what will your body do, biochemically?)
