"Discuss the possible presenting symptoms after a hard knock on the leg in the area behind the knee?"

Injury can occur to a person at any phase of his life. Human body is prone to injuries. It may happen while walking and getting slipped due to less friction[a1] , it may happen while playing or doing any certain activity. A hard knock on the leg in the area behind the knee can take place during playing of outdoor games like Rugby, Football, Cricket etc[a2] . These knocks can result into less as well as very severe injuries. The primary or the possible presenting symptoms of this type of knock may be swelling, wear and tear of ligaments in the area around the knock, Fractures, Sprain, partial or severe damage to the synovial membrane etc. (Arendt, 1995). These symptoms should be treated immediately otherwise they may result into certain major problems. The symptoms are discussed in detail below.

Swelling depicts the situation where blood gets released from the vessel in the affected area and get accumulated near the injured part of the body. The swelling generally develops within the first few hours of the injury and gradually increases with due course of time. These are easily noticeable and they need to be treated by providing proper medical attention. The occurrence of swelling and its retention on the body for greater period can serious major problems. Secondly, the knock on the area behind the knee can result in the wear and tear of the ligaments present in that area of leg. The wear and tear of soft ligament tissue can take months to heal completely. The ligaments are soft tissues which help in keeping the joints flexible. Their wear and tear at the joint area of knee can result in huge pain to the injured person.

The damage of ligaments and swelling are starting symptoms of a greater danger named Fractures. Fractures are termed to the breaking of bones as well as hard tissues of body. Generally, bone fractures are considered into account (Cooper, 2003). The fractures can take 15 days to months to get healed depending on the nature and size of fracture. The occurrence of fracture can be felt by the victim as the pain will be uncontrollable. Huge pain has to be controlled by the victim whenever the knee joint moves. Sprains can occur which can cause fatigue to the knee area of the leg (Stiell, 1997). These are due to coagulation of blood and certain acid in that part of the leg. The victim feels uncomfortable in moving his leg. Primary medical treatment is very much necessary for the victim to feel good in due course of time.
Thus, it has been seen that the primary symptoms of knock behind the knee may be swelling, wear and tear of ligaments in the area around the knock, Fractures, Sprain, partial or severe damage to the synovial membrane etc. Medical Professionals should be consulted for immediate treatment of the same so that any possible major injury can be avoided.
