A distance relay is used to protect the transmission system shown below. The line impedance of each section is given below:

Line Impedance ( Ohms)
1-2 6+j60
2-3 4+j40
2-4 5+j50

The rated voltage of the line is 500 kV. Assume a 1500:5 CT ratio and 4500:1

VT ratio at B12.

(a) Determine the settings Z1, Z2 & Z3 for the relay at B12.

(b) If the maximum current for line 1-2 is 1400A at 0.9 power factor lagging, verify that B12 does not trip for such current.
