Self Monitoring braking system for the railway challenge

Project Aim

The aim of this project is to design a new braking system to reduce the likelihood of the failure of the braking system of a railway vehicle. This new braking system must meet competitions rules and requirements for braking system.

Project Background

A locomotive is being developed for the railway challenge competition. Part of the competition requires a braking system to be developed. An innovative self-monitoring braking system would be beneficial and would improve the performance of the locomotive as a railway vehicle braking system is safety critical thus reducing failure is important.

Objectives

> To analyse current braking systems
> To review the rules of the competition and understand braking requirements
> To collect requirements and problems that may come up and prove some possible solutions
> Design the most suitable breaking system with some improvements.
> Manufacture final detailed design
> Run tests and FEA analysis on final design.

Work plan

Background research of different types of braking systems that already have been used on railway vehicles. A review of the rules and requirements of the competition have to be made in order to proceed to concept design. The concept design would show if it works properly and it is not just theoretical.

Then a detailed designed would be made for analysis, simulation and run tests on the design of the new innovative braking system. If the analysis and simulation show that it works properly the detailed design would be manufactured and run some final tests and analyse every aspect of the final model

Tasks to be completed

> Design a system that can send and receive information about the speed of the railway vehicle and in case of malfunction to cause it to stop immediately.
> Do an FEA analysis on the braking system
> Design concepts braking systems and a final detailed design
> Run some tests and simulation to the final detailed design to analyse every aspect of it

Conclusion

A new and innovative braking system like the one attempted on this project, will give us the opportunity to manage and control the locomotive and also avoid mistakes and errors that may occur. This will avoid crashes.
