Design of absorption column and the cooler

  • Process design of other units should be completed along with pipe sizes.
  • The commentary should discuss the health and safety implications of the decisions made as the design evolves and evidence should be presented to show that sustainability and ethical issues have been considered during this part of the design.
  • Full details of the calculations carried out, the equations and units used and a reasoned argument for their use should be provided or adequately referenced.
  • Specification summary sheets for each component of the unit operation should be provided in a suitable appendix and correctly referenced.
  • A detailed P and I diagram for at least one process unit operation identifying all control loops should be provided. The control strategy should be explained in detail and each control loop should be examined on an individual basis.
  • The health and safety issues arising from the control strategy adopted should be discussed.
  • A detailed costing of the unit operation designed in this section.
  • A complete HAZOP to cover one processline and one vessel designed in this section. The HAZOP should be accompanied by a commentary explaining what decisions were made? Why? What changes are required?
  • You should present a start-up/ shut-down and emergency shut-down procedures for the safe operation of your unit operation
  • run the process on hysis
  • all calculations to be done on excel with sample calculations
  • Define the types of mixture to be separated. The mixture may be heterogeneous or homogeneous.Study the properties of mixture to be separated e.g.: solubility. Choose a compatible solvent for absorption.
  • Set process parameters like flow rate of solvent, flow rate of mixture (may be air).Define %composition of substance in the mixture to be separated.
  • Selection of absorption materials and type of packing in absorption column.
  • Column designcalculations using McCabe-Thiele method, set efficiency and calculate the number of trays.Calculate HETP. Calculate total height of column etc.
  • Mechanical design of absorption column
  • Detailed P&ID
  • Discuss the process economics
