CLASSIFICATION OF GENERAL DRUGS -

1. NATURAL DRUGS -

Obtained from natural sources as minerals, animals, plants & microorganism.

(i) Minerals - It includes epsom salt or magnesium sulphate, liquid paraffin & boric acid etc.

(ii) Drugs derived from animals are insulin, thyroid, heparin, liver extract, shark liver oil (cod).

(iii) Drugs derived from plants are -

(a) Alkaloid - Morphin, colchicine, atropine, quinine, cocaine, caffeine.

(b) Oils - Castor, eucalyptus, clove.

(d) Tannins

2. SYNTHETIC DRUGS -

Manufactured in laboratory.

Eg.

Barbiturates Sedative

(Sleeping pills)

Pathedine Opiate Narcotics

Methadone Opiate Narcotics

Heroin Opiate Narcotics

Amphetamines Stimulant
