Choose a current topic in the news to examine critically. First, choose a topic that interests you, such as a candidate in the 2016 election, something you believe needs attention, or a controversial issue you feel strongly about. You are required to use at least one outside source and address both sides of this topic!

B-1 = 2 page outline with sandwiches & in-text citations + Works Cited

B-2 = 3-4 page draft with sandwiches & in-text citations + Works Cited

B-3 = 4-7 page polished draft with sandwiches & in-text citations + Works Cited

Steps to follow:

1. Zero in on one aspect of your topic; this focus will guide your claim.

2. Describe/discuss your topic for those unfamiliar with it (include background info).

2. Analyze the way your topic is presented by the different sources; what can you conclude after your investigation?

3. Make a claim and illustrate your claim by developing key ideas that support it (one idea per paragraph).

4. Explain your reasoning and back it up with examples.

5. Use quotes and cite correctly in-text and on the Works Cited.

Choose 5-7 key quotes from your source to include; discuss and analyze all source material.

Do this by building a quote skeleton using the most important quotes, then add your analysis to each quote.

For example, if you want to discuss Donald Trump's notions on building a wall to keep out immigrants from Mexico, or his views on registering Muslims in America, you would want to look at information from a pro-Trump source and an anti-Trump source and critically analyze both sources. Ultimately, you would consult neutral / unbiased / real news source(s) and check statements at a nonpartisan site like Politifact.
