Blasting Abrasive:

Sand had been use widely before new abrasive media invented. Today, manufacturer had more choices and better options in choosing blasting media for their own much specified production. Sand abrasive had been drop out of market due a lot of disadvantages.  The most major disadvantages is that result of the sand blast dust can be producing toxic and this is so called "Silicosis" which can cause lung infection. Whenever sand abrasive is use as blasting media, operator may need to wear personal protection gear to avoid any unwanted mishap happen.

In this project we are dealing with surgical instrumental equipment. Blade after grinding process had left very fine burrs particle on blade tips. Even production using brushing process is not able to completely remove the fine burrs. Therefore, Germany study team had suggested using sand blasting method to effectively remove all the burrs on blade tips. We also choose Bead blast as our blasting abrasive to clean the burrs from blade tips.

Abrasive Material

Usage

Coal Slag

Coal Slag is very economical abrasive. It is commonly use for remove paint and rusty component from steel surface. It also provide very fast cutting and did not collect moisture from compressed air.

Steel Grit

Steel Grit is almost similar with Coal Slag. It is just that Steel Grit is moisture in compressed air. Moisture can cause unwanted oxidation onto blasted surfaces.

Silicon Carbide

Silicon Carbide is also used in removing paint and rusty components. The output result may sustain longer. Most popular in glass etching design.

Glass Bead

Glass bead is usually used in general cleaning. It is a very light and fine material. Output of this may leave matte/satin surfaces.

Aluminium Oxide

This is also use in general cleaning and paint removal. This abrasive is much sharper than glass beads and it is usually used on glass etching design.

Walnut Shells

Wooden surface cleaning and paint removal. It is also capable in removing paint and carbon on aluminium surfaces. Output result showed very smooth finishing.

Plastic Grit

It is commonly used to remove paint on soft surface without any damaging the surfaces. Usually apply on boat parts and aircraft parts.

Corn Cob

Apply cleaning onto wood craft surface. Mostly apply on stone and glass material.
