Aim of Assessment

This assessment task will develop your knowledge of the function and importance of healthy body systems in an adult. It focuses on homeostasis, and importance of nutrition in maintaining health. Skills being developed include researching, writing, referencing and presenting information in a clear and concise written format. This task aims to develop an understanding of homeostatic processes that take place within the body and the importance of maintaining a healthy body. This assessment meets Learning Outcomes 1 to 5 (Learning Outcomes are described on page 7).

Details

All information obtained from books, journal articles or websites must be appropriately referenced both in-text and in the reference list. You must follow the American Psychological Association (APA) (eh ed) referencing style which is available from the Western Sydney University Library website and the Bioscience 1 vUWS site (under Assessments link).

Answer the following short answer questions:

Part A

Note: No Internet sources are to be used in Part A of this assessment.

Q1 An important aspect of homeostasis is maintaining a normal body temperature. Describe the homeostatic feedback system that would be activated in response to a decreased external temperature (400 words).

Part B

Please use template located in Assessment link in vUWS to answer Part B.

Q2 Normal carbohydrate digestion results in glucose being absorbed into the blood and elevating blood glucose levels. Why do cells need glucose? Describe the homeostatic feedback system that would be activated in response to an elevated blood glucose level. (400 words)

Q3 Vitamins and minerals are important for body system health. Name sources and describe the role of calcium ions and vitamin D in maintaining bone health. What would be a consequence to bone health if there was a lack of either calcium or vitamin D in the body? (200 words)

• A maximum of two relevant, credible internet sources may be used in Part B of this assessment.
• Answers are to be written in a formal tone, without the use of colloquial or slang words.
• Answers are to be written in the third person (he/she/it or they/them/their).
• Answers are to be written clearly and concisely using correct spelling and grammar and written in complete sentences and paragraphs. Bullet points are NOT acceptable.
• All answers must include in-text references and a reference list must be included at the end of the assessment.
• The reference list and in-text references are not included in the word limit.
