Background

This report will cover technical aspects of your individual contributions to your Modelling & Simulation and Sustainability Assessment project. It is vital that you highlight the individual contributions you made to the project.

This assessment is designed to give you a first-hand experience in communicating technical information, modelling details and sustainability assessment details to a technical audience. Specifically, your report shall focus upon (but is not limited to) the approaches and techniques used, their justification and theoretical details, numerical methods used and validation, decision methods used, limitations and assumptions involved and the scope for future work. The report should be structured as follows:

Individual Report Requirements

In a report of no more than 3000 words, individual reports of the following components will be expected:
1. Introduction and background
Describe the problem and its significance. Define the specific objectives of the project and identify the engineering problem to be solved.

2. Modelling approach to the engineering problem
Describe how modelling was used to solve the engineering problem posed.

3. Justification and limitations of modelling approach
Justify your selection of this approach against other alternatives and identify limitations of this approach. Discuss how you handled these limitations, what their impact was and how you validated the approach used.

4. Modelling equations and theoretical underpinnings
Discuss the governing equations that you solved and their theoretical underpinnings. Identify and discuss assumptions involved and their validity.

5. Numerical techniques and software packages

Discuss the numerical techniques employed to solve the governing equations and the software package used. Discuss issues regarding accuracy and stability of numerical solutions. Discuss the ways cross-validated numerical predictions.

6. Assessment approach to the engineering problem
Describe how sustainability assessment was used to estimate the performance of the engineering problem posed.

7. Justification and limitations of assessment approach
Justify your selection of this approach (consider: system boundary, performance indicators, decision methods, etc.) against other alternatives and identify limitations of this approach. Discuss how you handled these limitations, what their impact was and how you validated the approach used.

8. Assessment equations and assumptions
Present examples of the data, calculations (for quantitative indicators) and processes (for qualitative indicators) used to estimate the performance indicators. Identify and discuss assumptions involved and their validity.

9. Outcomes and predictions
Discuss outcomes and model predictions to date. Present the assessment results and compare the product variants. Demonstrate what initiatives you have taken in developing your model and assessment.

10. Future directions
Identify and discuss future directions for modelling & simulation and sustainability assessment to further explore the engineering question, pros and cons of these directions and recommendations
