Assignment

Instructions:

• Simulate the circuits below in Multisim, obtain screen captures of all simulation results before the laboratory session. Please note that, whenever you are displaying two related signals on the oscilloscope, you should align the ground markers of both signals (it is easier to just set ground levels to 0 Volt) as well as choosing a proper Volts/Div setting so as to be able to make a meaningful comparison of the two oscilloscope signals (make sure both signals are not saturated, but, instead, remain entirely visible within the frame of the oscilloscope's screen). Make sure you do everything you are asked to do in order to get maximum points. Show all the obtained screen captures in your prelab report.

• Prepare a typed up report. Submit a pdf of your report electronically on Isidore. A formal write up is not required. However keep your report annotated, clear and succinct. That means you still need to label figures and tables if included and clearly state questions you are answering

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FACT THAT IN FIGURE 1 BELOW, FOR INSTANCE, THE TWO PROBES OF THE VIRTUAL AGILENT OSCILLOSCOPE IN SIMULATION ARE THE "X" AND "Y" PROBES. THE GROUND PROBE FOR EACH "X" AND "Y" PROBE LIKE YOU HAVE ON THE REAL AGILENT OSCILLOSCOPE IS NOT SHOWN IN THE FIGURE (AND IS NOT VISIBLE IN SIMULATION) HOWEVER ALL VOLTAGE WAVEFORM MEASUREMENTS ON THE VIRTUAL OSCILLOSCOPE ARE WITH RESPECT TO THE INVISIBLE GROUND OF THE CIRCUIT IN SIMULATION. WITH THIS IN MIND, IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS THAT FIGURE 1 BELOW SHOWS "X" PROBE (ON NODE 3) IS MEASURING THE VOLTAGE ON THE OUTPUT OF THE FUNCTION GENERATOR WITH RESPECT TO GROUND AND "Y" PROBE (ON NODE 1) IS MEASURING THE OUTPUT VOLTAGE AFTER THE DIODE WITH RESPECT TO GROUND.

Use the 1N4149 diode if you can't find the 1N4148 diode.

Question 1: Clipping circuit

a. Construct the clipping circuit shown in Figure 1. Using a dual channel oscilloscope obtain the input and output waveforms. Note that the function generator in Figure 1 is set to output units of "rms" and not "pk-pk". Make sure that both channels are synchronized in terms of the vertical sensitivity (V/Div) and zero volt reference axis (this needs to be done throughout this prelab).

b. Construct the clipping circuit with a reference voltage source as shown in Figure 2. Obtain a screen capture of the waveforms illustrating the clipping phenomenon with the reference voltage source indicated as V2 in Figure 2.

Question 2:

a. Construct the peak detector circuit shown in Figure 3. The idea behind such a design is to charge the capacitor up to peak voltage of the input and to refresh it with each cycle before discharge occurs. Using a dual channel oscilloscope, obtain a screen capture of the input and output waveforms.

b. Moreover, investigate the effect of adding a load resistance R1 across the output as shown in Figure 4. Obtain a screen capture that demonstrates such an effect with load resistances of 390Ω, 56KΩ and 2.2MΩ.
