Your office supervisor asks you to evaluate the following site and subsurface data for feasibility of constructing three residential buildings with one-level open space below for parking at each, at finish grade elevation 150 feet (+/- 3 inches to slope for drainage), project datum. This places the parking below existing grades. The adjacent slope is as much as 35 feet high and the project is in Chittenden county near Lake Champlain.

Provide the following foundation design recommendations for three identical structures proposed as shown on the attached plan:

1. Bearing capacity for 1-inch and 2-inches of estimated footing settlement.

2. Recommended design values for foundation sliding resistance (base and lateral pressure).

3. Seismic site classification according to the International Building Code (or ASCE 7-10).

4. Bottom of foundation elevations for frost protection.

Use 125 pounds per square foot per floor level for estimated total dead and live loads and expected column spacings at 25 to 30 feet. The owner is contemplating structures at three to six stories high.

Deliverables

Prepare a brief memorandum, in a quality suitable to be given directly to the client, with the following:

1. Project site conditions and planned construction.

2. Simple narrative explaining the subsurface cross-section (including groundwater).

3. Feasibility of the site for spread footing construction.

4. Bearing capacity recommendations.

5. Seismic site classification and foundation sliding resistance values for static and seismic conditions.

Include the exploration/site plan, a representative subsurface cross-section, and your calculation package. You do not need to include the boring logs.

Graduate student(s) taking the course are to use at least three methods to compute foundation design bearing pressures and to comment on the reliability of the results. Undergraduate students should use at least two methods.
