Assignment -

Theme - Design is an integration of synthesis and analysis. As a part of understanding the design process of any mechanical engineering system, kinematic and dynamic analyses are essential. For the kinematic analysis, one has to identify the mechanism/mechanisms inside to transfer the motion, finding out the links positions, its velocities and accelerations. Dynamic forces are calculated based on the material used to construct the mechanism, link lengths, shape and acceleration. These dynamic forces cause mechanical vibrations and these vibrations are properly transferred to the ground by carrying out vibration analysis. You are instructed to investigate and analyse the various mechanisms mentioned in each task and prepare a design report for the same.

Task 1: The figure 1 represents an elevator used in apartments and hotels

88_figure.png

a) Generate the kinematic diagram of the mechanism.

b) Conduct design synthesis on the machine.

c) Generate dimensions for the mechanism and plot the space diagram.

d) Find the linear velocity and angular velocity of the links by instant centre method.

e) Find the linear velocity and angular velocity of the links by relative velocity method.

f) How the change in dimensions of links will affect the performance of the mechanism.

Task 2: The figure 2 represents the tower crane used in material handling.

1401_figure1.png

a) Identify the mechanism required for the motion.

b) Design the mechanism and conduct design synthesis on the mechanism.

c) How the load is balanced in the mechanism?

d) Explain the working principle of mechanism based on kinematics background.

e) Explain the possibility of inversions on the identified mechanism.

Task 3: The figure 3 represents the construction hoist used to handle material handling in construction sites

905_figure2.png

a) Explain the working principle of construction hoist and its application.

b) Identify the mechanism used for construction hoist.

c) Identify the driving link and generate the kinematic diagram.

d) How the vibration on the machine is managed during operation?
