Assignment - DISEASE REPORT

Each student is to select a disease (PNEUMOCYSTIS PHEUNOMIA) that interests her/him and prepare a presentation to be made to the class. In addition, a written report is to be submitted to the instructor.

A. Oral presentation

1. The oral presentation to the class is to be about 15 minutes with a maximum of 20 minutes. The student should include in the presentation:

a. Scientific information on infectious agent - type of microbe, structure, genetics, infectious life cycle, interesting physiology

b. Identify a physiological or metabolic process that makes the pathogen successful, and explain the success of the strategy

c. Epidemiology - geographical occurrence of the disease; who gets the disease: age, gender, race; how the disease is transmitted in the population; reservoirs

d. Information on the disease - development, signs and symptoms,

e. Additionally, the student may discuss any other aspect of the disease that is significant (e.g. origins, history, treatments/prevention). If the disease is historically significant do not spend more than a 2-3 minutes on the history though, keep the focus on the science.

2. The student must prepare some audio-visual aid for use during the presentation. This should be done with PowerPoint or similar softwares. Use large fonts (20+) & as few words as possible in the presentation, e.g. include pictures/graphs & describe the visuals.

As a rule thumb, you can figure about a slide a minute so your presentation will be 15-20 slides (no longer than that.

If you do not have PowerPoint on your computer, the presentation can be put together in the schools open use computers in the library or you may use the computer in lab room. If using the computers in the library, remember to save files on a CD or disk or flash memory stick. All document files are deleted from the hard drive of library computers every evening.

NOTE: The presentation is NOT to be read to the class. Students should practice the presentation for both timing & familiarity with the material. Use as many visuals as possible (pictures, micrographs, images, graphs, tables and discuss the significance of theses.

3. The student is to prepare for his/her classmates a handout (this can be a printout of the PowerPoint presentation). It must be handed out at the time of the presentation

B. Written report

All students must turn in their written reports (~3 pages double spaced) on the date indicated:

The main body of the report is a summary of the oral presentation. It is to be typed in paragraph format. This may include information not covered in the oral presentation. Remember to include your references.

Note: Simply staple the pages of the report together do not put in a folder.

C. Disease Report Quiz questions (no points but if you do not submit questions, you will not have questions you have specific knowledge of on the quiz)

Students should provide 5 quiz questions & answers--multiple choice.

Questions should be emailed to the instructor with the subject line "Disease Report Quiz".

Questions are due the same day as the written report.
