Assessment 1 - Observation and analysis reports

Task - 1 - Vehicle 1- Assessment Instructions

For this assessment, you are required to analyse and evaluate an electrical or electronic fault in the common rail diesel engine management system of a vehicle based on the scenario provided.

Scenario - A vehicle fitted with common rail diesel engine has multiple complaints. MIL warning light stays on. Fuel filter warning light comes on intermittently. When accelerated vehicle is not responsive and engine is hunting.

1. Identify and confirm work requirement

  • Purpose and objective of the analysis
  • Collect vehicle information and specification
  • Confirm the fault by presenting evidence
  • WHS requirements including personal protection needs. identifying hazards and managing risk

2. Prepare for analysis by:

  • Establishing standard measures to evaluate the objective
  • Following the repair manual and preparing diagnose procedure
  • Listing all the required resources such as tools, equipment and material
  • Identifying the components for analysing the cause of fault in the common rail diesel engine management system

3. While analysing you should

  • Present trouble shoot method according to manufacturer specification to carry out failure analysis
  • Present testing procedure used for relevant components following all safety and environmental requirements
  • Confirm your findings using reliable process, for instance replacing the faulty component and check if the symptoms still present
  • Compare the readings with repair manual
  • Analyse the symptoms and provide conclusion and document the process according to workplace requirement

4. After analysing provide repair recommendation by

  • Identifying the cause of fault for component failure or system failure
  • Provide various possible suggestions to resolve the issue and choose the best possible option after taking into account different variants such as time, cost and available resources. It should be done in compliance with regulatory requirement and Australian design rules.

5. After completing the work

  • Validate the work to meet workplace expectations.
  • Follow cleaning procedure Including disposal of waste and non-recyclable and collection of recyclable material.
  • Check and store all electrical and mechanical tools and equipment upon completion of work in accordance with procedures to handle broken tools
  • Report recommendations in the report attached.
Submission should include:

Introduction
Vehicle details
Confirm the fault (visual inspection/pre repair road test/ Freeze frame data)
Order of the task to be performed
List of required resource
Testing procedure of relevant component
Test result and comparison with specification
Conclusion/repair suggestion
Reason for component and/or system failure
