(a)   For any individual :

                 ·          We should check house, doors and windows and have them repaired whenever necessary.

                 ·          We should keep a hurricane lantern filled with kerosene, flashlight, candles, match boxes and enough dry     cells.

                 ·          We should keep our radio sets in working condition and some extra batteries ready for use.

                 ·          We should shut the glass windows.

                 ·          We should avoid visiting places where any river or stream flows or water due to heavy rains may           accumulate.

                 ·          We should store extra food that need not be cooked such as sattu, flat rice etc. storage of drinking water                               should also be done.

                 ·          Arrangements for children and old people requiring special diets should be done.

                 ·          When leaving for a shelter our valuable items should be kept on upper floors or tied to the roof to prevent                             them from submerging.

                 ·          To stay calm our ability to face any emergency are of great importance and it influences others positively.

                 ·          We should stay in the shelter until we are directed to leave it.

(b)   For general public :

                 ·          Loose objects like, cans etc. should be avoided as these may prove disastrous during strong winds.

                 ·          We should immediately vacate our dwellings if advised by authorities, especially in the situation when these are in the low areas.

                 ·          We should not pay heed to or spread any misinformation and listen to official warnings through radio only.

                 ·          If the weather clears suddenly during a storm indicated a short pause in the wind or rain, we must not come out as the strong wind may come back suddenly from the opposite direction more fiercely. This generally happens when the eye of the storm passes over our region.

                 ·          We should consume only safe water.

                 ·          We should keep away ourselves from any loose wires hanging down the electricity poles to avoid the danger of electrocution.

Measures to take the people before the first warning of the cyclone (48 hours earlier) :

                 ·          Check houses, repair doors and windows and get fixed any loose tiles.

                 ·          Area around our houses should be inspected. Any dried or dying tree should be removed.

                            Removable objects such as loose zinc sheets, garbage cans and signboards etc. should   be removed.

                 ·          Lanterns should be filled with kerosene. We should keep match boxes, flashlights, candles, and extra                                    batteries ready at easily accessible places.

                 ·          We should keep some wooden boards ready to boards the glass windows in the event of a cyclone.

                 ·          Unsafe building should be demolished.

                 ·          We should keep our radio sets in function.

Post-cyclone measures to be taken by the people:

                 ·          People should not leave their shelters until advised by the authorities to return to their homes.

                 ·          We should seek immunization immediately against any potential disease that may spread after the                                       cyclone is over.

                 ·          Injured and sick persons should be taken to the nearest hospital for immediate medical attention.

                 ·          We should keep away from the area of disaster unless it is necessary to do so.

                 ·          Any loose wire hanging down the electricity poles should be strictly avoided.

                 ·          We should be cautions of anti-social elements as they indulge in spreading rumors.

                 ·          Any losses sustained by the people should be reported to the revenue authorities.

                 ·          Debris should be cleared from the houses or dwellings.

                 ·          Our relatives should be informed about our safety.
