An eight year old boy has an Individualized Education Plan due to learning problems. When he reads, he frequently misses letters and occasionally entire words. His writing is messy and disorganized. His study habits are erratic with him claiming that the words sometimes blur or "swim" giving him headaches. Recently, his gym teacher suggested that his parents take him for a physical examination. The teacher is concerned that what has been passed off by family and other teachers as just clumsiness might be more serious. It was noted that the boy had very poor eye - hand coordination, nearly fell over when trying to balance on one foot, and would complain of headaches and stomach upset when involved in sport activities requiring fast movement and turning. The child is taken for a checkup and found to have a vestibular disorder. How does the vestibular system work? Which of the above physical observations can be attributed to the disorder? Could any of these learning disabilities be connected to this? Explain.
