An analog line concentrator resides logically between the line circuits and the line side of a switching fabric. One might be placed physically at the distribution point in the loop architecture or, even at the pedestal- in which case, the line circuits are also remoted. Or, one might be placed physically in the switching office, like the line finder stage in a Step fabric. Suppose a Crossbar switch, built out to be 60*10, costs $1000. Suppose the A-to-D converters in a digital switch's line circuits cost $15 each. (a) Is it economical to split the line circuits in a digital switch into their analog and digital components and to use an in-office analog line concentrator between 60 analog line circuits and 10 ADCs? (b) Suppose the cost of remoting the 60 analog line circuits and the line concentrator is another $3000, but the loops between the remote point and the CO cost $70 apiece. Is remote line concentration economical?
