Aim - To enable students to describe the internal structure, bonding of atoms and molecules and to understand the mechanical properties of materials.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the internal structure of atoms and molecules.

2. Compare the different types of crystals and the defects evident within them, & explain how these defects affect the mechanical properties of materials.

3. Discuss how the bonding within materials affects the properties of the material.

4. Describe the Electrical and Thermal properties of materials

Task 1

Al Hassan Testing & Calibration LLC is performing material testing & analysis for its customers for over three decades in Oman. They are expertise in field of infrastructure, aerospace and automotive components, metals, composites, polymers, construction materials as given below. Each student should select one specific material from any one of categories of material given below with prior approval from module leader.

List of material tested in Al Hassan testing & Calibration LLC:
1. Polymer Matrix Composites
2. Carbon Fiber Composite
3. Stainless steel
4. Polymers and plastics
5. Elastomers
6. Nano-materials
7. Smart (intelligent) Materials and Structures

Write a report based on the following points.

a. Knowledge and understanding of the topic:
Demonstrate understanding of material composition of the material selected, observation of its microscopic features, possible defects and flaws that could be present in the material.

b. Application and analysis of the topic (Module specific Skill):
Equipment's used for evaluating mechanical properties of this material, list the methods used to conduct testing of mechanical properties. Observe the suitable standards and accreditation adopted by the company to perform testing on this material. Checking the Susceptibility to failure.

c. The Report structure in terms of logic and coherence :
Report structure should have a clear start and a clear end. Information within submissions should also be logical and well grouped. Report structure, abstract, introduction, methodology/Analysis, applications, conclusion, citation & referencing.

Task 2

Student should visit an industry in the fields mentioned below. Select any one product either from below mentioned products or any other product from that industry with prior approval from module leader.

Type of industry to be visited

1. Oil and gas Industry (E.g. - Valves, Boiler, turbines, pumps, pipelines etc.)
2. Electronic industry (E.g.-Transistors, amplifiers, diodes, motherboard, sensors etc.)
3. Mechanical industry (E.g.-Engines, Gears, bearings, Shafts, machine frame etc.)
4. Health care Industry (Surgical tools, Storage bottles etc.)

Write a report on following points.

a. Knowledge and understanding of the topic:

Historic development of product in terms of material used, Structural formula /diagram, Composition of material, Type of bonding and Crystal structure.

b. Application and analysis of the topic (Module specific Skill):

Various Properties and factors affecting these properties, Recommend Competitive materials for same application .Support your recommendation with correct reasoning,

Suggest possible future development in the material used in this product

c. The Report structure in terms of logic and coherence:

Report structure should have a clear start and a clear end. Information within submissions should also be logical and well grouped. Report structure, abstract, introduction, methodology/Analysis, applications, conclusion, citation & referencing.
