3. Refer to the results of the 7-day compression test using the standard curing conditions. Does your cement meet the specification requirements as stated in- table 2?

4. Why is it necessary to require such conditions-sand cement ratio, w/c ratio and type of sand? A graded sand is specified for use in the mortar cube test. What would be the likely results if a one-sized sand was used instead of a graded sand? Would the strength of the mortar be increased or decreased is a one-sized sand was used?

5. A standard tamping procedure is specified for preparing the specimens. Why is this necessary? If the cement was not consolidated in accordance with the scheme specified in the ASTM standard would the strength of the mortar be likely decreased or increased? Hint: consider how poor consolidation - voids trapped in the mortar - might affect strength.

6. Is the degree of mixing important in determining the strength of the mortar? Explain what might happen if care was not taken to ensure that the cement, sand, and water are thoroughly blended.

7. The ASTM standard specifies the rate at which the load is applied to the test specimens. Would you expect the strength of the specimens to increase or decrease if the load was applied rapidly? If the load was applied very slowly?
