1 Two cables (AC and BC) are tied together at C and are loaded (P and Q) as shown in the figure. Using trigonometry, determine the range of values of Q for which the tension will not exceed 60N in either cable.

2 Calculate the tension in each segment of the cable shown and also the vertical distances of the points B and E below the support points A and F. Both C and D are 1.5m below A and F.

3 Draw the 'shear force' diagram, 'bending moment' diagram and deflected shape for the beam shown in the figure. Clearly show all workings out. Show all significant values (forces and distances) and points on diagrams.

4 a) You have undertaken a practical using the shear force apparatus (as shown in the figure below).

36_shear force apparatus.jpg

Include the following information from the practical:

• A table in your handwriting showing a complete set of experimental and theoretical results.

• Your rough notes showing workings out for your calculation of the theoretical results.

• A comment on the comparison of the theoretical and experimental values obtained (In no more than 250 words).

4 b) You have undertaken a practical using the truss apparatus (as shown in the figure below)

697_truss apparatus.jpg

Attach your copy of the results table taken from the practical. You should work out the experimental forces for each member.

You will be allocated a value of F for which you are to work out the theoretical forces for each member. Show your workings out.

In no more than 150 words, comment on the comparison of the theoretical and experimental values obtained for your value of F.

5 Knowing that P = 5.2kN, determine the factor of safety for the structure shown. Use E = 200GPa and consider that buckling in the plane of the structure. Refer to column notes for this question.

6 The compound beam section shown in the figure is formed of a channel section and a universal beam section welded together as shown. The cross sectional areas (A) and relevant second moments of areas (Icc) about the centroidal axes of each section are as tabulated. The distance 26.5mm is the distance from the top of the compound beam to the centroid of the channel section. Calculate Ixx of the compound beam.

7 Finally, each student is to attach a photocopy of their "tutorial completion form".

Ensure you indicate which tutorial questions you have attempted up to the date of submission of this assignment.

Note that you may be asked to show your attempted questions to a tutor! Sign and date the form.
