1. Learning outcomes

At the end of this project, students will be able to:

1) Analyze power system faults based on balance and unbalanced faults techniques. (PLO4-CTPS-C4)
2) Express power flow analysis using EMTP software. (PLO3-CS-P4)
3) Explain the suitable protection schemes to ensure power system delivery and sustainability for given case study. (PLO11-EVTS-A3)

2. Activities

As power system engineers, you are required by power system planner to assess the rotor angles stability of each machine in the system. In order to do that, you are required to simulate the dynamic responses of the system following a disturbance in the system. The software that your company provides for the task is MATLAB R2013b [1] [2].

3. System descriptions

You need to study two different test system models. They are listed as follows:

1) Test system model described in Example 11.8 [1].
2) An IEEE test system models of your choice.

4. Team organizations

You need to form a group consists of four (4) members. Each working group needs to appoint a project manager and the rest of the team will take role as power system engineer to complete the project.

5. Instructions

The task needs to be completed within twelve (12) weeks (dateline is in Week 14). Each working group is required to submit a minute meeting every week to report their activities throughout the week. To complete this project, each working group needs to assess the rotor angle stability of the given system for different types of disturbance.

6. Expected outcomes

At the end of this project, your team needs to present the outcomes, demonstrate your work, and produce an extensive report with the following details:

1) Introduction of the study (background, scope, objectives, and literature review).
2) The method used to model the system using the software.
3) The plot of rotor angles, rotor speeds, electrical power of each machine for each task (disturbance) given to your team, ranging from stable cases to unstable cases to demonstrate the change of dynamic responses of each machine.
4) The critical clearing time and angle of the system for the disturbance assigned to your group.
5) The discussions and the analysis of the results in the context of the rotor angle stability of the system for power system protection applications.
6) Conclusions of the project.
7) References related to the project.

7. Assessment

You will be assessed according to the assessment rubric in Appendix A.
