1. A bicycle has many components that will be subjected to various types of load during its operational life cycle. An example bicycle is shown in the Figure below where most of the components are identified for the specific bicycle shown. All these components have to be designed for strength so that they can withstand the loads applied to them during the life cycle of the bicycle. The life cycle of a product should consider its use and foreseeable misuse.

2. In this course reverse engineering a product involves evaluating the design of all of its components for their strength against mechanical failures as such components are subject to different loads during the life cycle of the product.

3. Consider a bicycle of your own choosing. Please note that you need to have access to the bicycle that you choose so that you can measure its relevant dimensions for your calculations.

4. Develop an overall dimensional diagram of the bike measuring all of its relevant dimensions.

5. Perform a load envelope analysis and determine the types and maximum loads that would be applied to this bicycle during its life cycle. You need to consider at least two types of load envelopes for different situations in the life cycle of the bicycle (this will be discussed in more detail in class).

6. For each of the two load cycles under consideration for your project you need to determine all the critical components and select three for analysis.

7. For the components that you have selected please provide detailed drawings and bill of materials.

8. Evaluate the design of each set of three critical components against mechanical failure and determine their life as designed.

9. Use your analysis to define a life and a maintenance schedule for the bicycle.

10. Can you suggest design modifications to any of the components that you selected that can improve the life or the maintenance requirements of the bicycle that you have chosen.
