Your Rhetorical Situation: Scenario, Audience, Purpose

Assignment Scenario: Our course is going to offer you opportunities to interact in imaginary business scenarios.

Assignments will be centered on these scenarios. For this module, I would like for you to interact in accordance with the following fictional scenario: you are all colleagues who are part of a team. Each of you has a different position on this team-you hold a position in your desired field or profession, whether it be in nursing, management, sports media relations, software engineer, web design, etc. I know-it's highly unlikely this would happen in the real world.

All of you have worked on the team for one year. In order to do this assignment, you have to have a real goal in mind when you complete your job application materials. You may like your job now, and maybe you are taking this course just to satisfy an English requirement. If so, how about thinking of your dream job, then?

This imaginary team you work with is part of an imaginary multinational corporation: Central Global Communications. As luck would have it, the corporation is so large and diverse that it has become attractive to a buyer, a multimillionaire based in Hong Kong.

The buyer has requested that all of you reapply for your current imaginary position. This situation actually happens fairly often in the real corporate world.

On your résumé, use your actual, real experience and work history (etc.). Invent just this one imaginary position for the purpose of completing this assignment. This means that you will have to select a desired field/occupation/profession/position (even if it's just a promotion to a position within the company you already really work for), find out what is required to gain that position, and pretend as if you have been doing this already for one year. This imaginary content should then be added to the true information about you and your work and educational experiences you will include in your résumé.
