Primary Source Documents
After reading the three primary source documents, write an essay that engages with gender in the early Cold War period. What do these documents say about gender roles in the early post World War II period? Are women feeling empowered? If so, how? If not, what are some of the issues they are raising about gender equality? Use the documents as evidence to back your claims.
In the introduction, summarize the role of women in the early Cold War period. You can use lectures, lecture notes, and the textbook. In the introduction, all you have to do in three of four sentences is provide the background for how you plan to address the questions. At the end of the introduction form and argument.
For example: In this paper I'm going to argue that gender roles became very complicated in the early Cold War period as some women felt comfortable with their roles in the family, while others were frustrated with their lack of power outside of the home.
In the body of the paper you should write a paragraph that address the ideas ideas you outlined in your thesis statement (in my example that traditional versus modern women and what both groups are stating and why. Make sure you give solid examples and evidence from the documents to back your claims.
In the conclusion, take the opposite position then your argument. For example, I argued that women seemed to be frustrated with their roles in the 1950s, but this seems to be more representative of white women middle class issues. My paper does not, no do the sources, really bring attention to how African Americans or Latinos/as concerns were being address or if they had the same issues. Furthermore, another issues that the paper does not cover is....
Your paper needs to be at least 1,000 words or 3-4 pages.
Before turning in your paper make sure to set aside a time to proofread your work. Watch out for passive voice and any mechanical errors. Also, format your paper with 1" margins and double-space the entire paper. No quadruple spacing between paragraphs.
