Hofstede: Clustering Countries on Work-Related

Value Dimensions

Geert Hofstede's work represents the largest and most influential effort to cluster countries by cultural values.Hofstede's conclusions are based on a survey that asked over 116,000 employees in more than 70 countries about their values and beliefs. From these data, Hofstede extracted four basic cultural dimensions: individualism-collectivism, masculinity-femininity, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance. He created scores, ranging from 1 to 100, for each dimension and then used these scores to compare countries.

In addition, to help interpret his results, Hofstede also created cultural "maps" that position each country in terms of pairs of culture dimensions. Since countries also tend to cluster, similarities and differences between groups of countries were assessed. Overall, Hofstede's work, especially around these four dimensions, has important implications for managing employees around the world.
