Why a covalent bond is directional?

Covalent bond is formed as a result of pairing of two electrons in atomic orbitals of two atoms. Bond then must lie along the direction of atomic orbital i.e. bond only takes place in the direction of shared pairs of electrons. Hence covalent bonds would have strong directional preferences unlike metallic and ionic bonds.
