Kinesiologist Christy Lotz, Michael Agnew, Alison Godwin and Joan Stevenson (2009) explains that "Prior to the release of back belts for use in industry, no research had been performed to assess the ability of these belts to reduce low back pain" (p. 332). Without data for wearable lifting devices, companies would be less likely to invest in these aides to support their workers and increase work productivity while reducing muscle fatigue and injury.

This quote is helpful in supporting my thesis statement because it helps set the tone that at the time of the basic back brace being invented there was no research to back it. Most business models that I have uncovered will not invest in a product to help productivity unless its proven.

Lotz et al., (2009) in the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology explains that there was no research to support the effects of the "back belt" prior to it becoming available to companies to give to their employees. The lack of data at the time did not support the mandatory use of wearable lifting devices to prevent fatigue and injury.
