What is the purpose of this paper?

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated president, he promised a New Deal for the American people who had been suffering under the Great Depression. "It is common sense," Roosevelt said, "to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another, but above all, try something." The relief, recovery, and reform programs of the New Deal were Roosevelt's attempt to try something. Some of the programs were unsuccessful, but others are still in place today. Examining the New Deal programs can help one understand how government intervention affects people and the economy.

What is the paper?

Explain the effect of four New Deal programs (two from phase I and two from phase II) on the country during the Great Depression. Specifically, you should describe the following:

  • How these New Deal programs addressed the problems created by the Depression
  • The impact of these programs on people's lives
  • The criticisms of the programs and any attempts to influence the policies of the New Deal
  • Any lasting impact the New Deal has had on American society or government
  • A conclusion about how studying this policy or program helps us understand other policies or programs

What are the requirements of this paper?

  • A multi-paragraph essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Two pages in length

How do I complete the paper?

Choose the four programs that you want to explain. Research these programs and gather sources to help you understand each one better. Write a description of each program and explain what problem it was supposed to address. Also explain how the program affected the American people. After you have written your descriptions, organize your information into your essay. Write an introduction that presents the background context for FDR's New Deal, and then write a conclusion in which you discuss some of the criticisms of the New Deal.

Make explicit references within the paper or presentation to three or more credible sources that provide relevant information, AND cite sources within the paper, presentation, or bibliography.

When creating your document, be sure to use the following:

  • Times New Roman font
  • 12 pt. font
  • Standard margins (right and left margins: 1.25"; top and bottom margins: 1")
  • Double spacing throughout
  • "Tab" key to indent all paragraphs
