A study of using HPLC to monitor benzoin condensation to improve yield that the cyanide catalyst provided better yields than two differently-timed thiamine catalysts. What is the possible chemical explanation for this? I understand that a reaction using a thiamine catalyst at room temperature for 48 hours may lead to lower yield due to catalyst decomposition, but I'd like to know a more technical explanation.
