Watching the movie Mishima (Paul Schrader, 1985) and then write a paper.

Imagine that you receive a hypothetical email from one of your friends or family members that says, "Hey, I just watched this interesting movie called Mishima. Aren't you taking an Intro to Cinema Studies? Since you know more about how and why movies get made, can you enlighten me on what's going on in this movie?"

For the purposes of this assignment, watch that film (see below) and write a 4-5 pg. "letter" in response to this open-ended prompt, which should demonstrate what you learned in CINE 101 this semester, using this specific film as your object of discussion. To demonstrate the breadth of your knowledge, your response letter should briefly discuss how you see each of these broad areas at work in the film:
1. Narrative form/structure
2. Cinematography
3. Editing
4. Sound
5. Mise-en-scene

Use at least one specific term that falls under each of those broad categories to explain how Mishima (Paul Schrader, 1985) produces its overall aesthetic or thematic meaning. In other words, show your reader that you know how to use film analysis terms to make sense of a film you probably haven't seen before. Other than briefly addressing each of the five listed categories, you are free to use the paper to demonstrate, in whatever way you best see fit, how much you have learned this semester.

You don't have to do any sort of outside research for this response; you can simply focus on what aesthetic techniques you notice at work in Mishima. (If, however, you decide to use any direct quotes from the textbook or any other sources, they should be clearly cited in parentheses. Any plagiarism will be grounds for failing the entire assignment!) Be sure that your paper is at least 4 full pages of text (not including any works cited page), otherwise there will be a deduction.
