Lethal Qaeda-ISIS Rivalry

Barnard and MacFarquhar highlight the rivalry that is cropping up between Al Qaeda and ISIS. They explain how both the terrorist groups claim their activities in the hostage crisis at a Malian hotel. The two groups exposed their disagreement on social media over which of the jihadists' organizations was more prominent and righteous. According to Barnard and MacFarquhar, 130 people were killed in Paris by ISIS (2015). Amazingly, militants linked to Al Qaeda took credit for the hotel attack.

Barnard and MacFarquhar conclude that the battle of supremacy is growing among the jihadist group with each fighting to be more powerful (2015). This campaign has resulted into several warlords and terrorist groups emerging with each group claiming its affiliation to a certain group.

Militants affiliated to Qaeda Seize 2 Yemeni Towns

Al Qaeda militants seized control of two towns in southern Yemen some days back, and Almosawa and Fahim explicitly explain how these fighters are slowly taking control of Yemen. They explain how the militants have raided the two towns in southern Yemen and took control of them by taking advantage of the turmoil during the country's civil war. AL Qaeda's control of Yemen is growing rapidly. Its local affiliates took control of Al Mukalla, the fifth largest city in Yemen.

According to Almosawa and Fahim, the militants have been operating freely apart from the challenges that Yemen's Houthi rebels are posting. These rebels are fighting to restore Yemen's exiled government to power (2015). They believe that the militants' rule in Yemen has to be stopped as witnessed by the current air strikes by Saudi Arabia against the Houthis. Unfortunately, the Arab armies have avoided attacking Al Qaeda.

The new tactics of Al Qaeda to Keep Power

Hubbard finds it quite startling for the Al Qaeda to work closely with the local groups on the battlefield, and something seen in the militants affiliated with Osama Bin Laden. The image of these militants has for long been of shadowy operatives that plot international attacks from hideouts but its branches in Syria and Yemen are amazingly making a joint cause with the locals in the battlefield.

Hubbard analyzes how the Al Qaeda seized government buildings in Al Mukalla, releasing jihadists from prison and stealing millions of dollars from the bank (2015). Surprisingly, rather than following the standard procedure of hoisting their flags and imposing Islamic laws after the seizure, they passed control to the civilian council and provided it with a budget to pay salaries, hire teams to clean up the city and import fuel. They then receded to the background, controlling only one police station.

Hubbard concludes that the strategy of Al Qaeda working with the locals benefits it since it allows it to build local support while providing some cover against the threat of foreign military actions. Hubbard also notices that despite the Al Qaeda's increased involvement in local battles, it is still committed to attacking the West.
