There are many methodological approaches to study the American West. Different topics and themes provide additional dimensions to the history that helps us understand how the West emerges. Use this opportunity to explore different topics to analyze the West, for example the environmental transformation, literature, gender, race, migration, presidential policies, etc. In many ways, you have the opportunity to explore and highlight the West through your own perceptions of what the West is and how it developed.

Your portfolio should be organized as follows:

1. Title Page (name, date, class and title of project)

2. Select an image from the nineteenth century that reflects the West. The image can be from a newspaper, magazine, photograph or art work.

• Provide a copy of the image.

• Cite the source

• Provide information on the source (who, what, when, where and why)

• Why you chose this particular image.

3. Select an image from the twentieth century that reflects the West. The image can be from a newspaper, magazine, photograph or art work.

• Cite the source

• Provide information on the source (who, what, when, where and why)

• Provide a copy of the image.

• Why you chose this particular image.

4. Bibliography

• Select a historical theme in the American West (for example gender, environment, law, etc.) and provide 6 bibliographic entries (Chicago Manual of Style Citation). Three must be recent book titles (since 2000). The other three entries must be academic journal articles.

5. Short Research Essay

• Select a topic for your research

• Make sure that in selecting your topic, you address key issues and individuals, and how they were instrumental in the development of the west. You can answer questions such as, what did they contribute? Why should they be considered integral factors in the history of the West?
