To write a 750 + word paper (no more than 1200 please) which addresses one the following assignment options.

The successful paper will focus clearly on the assignment, utilizing a clearly stated, arguable thesis which unifies, limits and focuses the topic. Evidence presented as support will be specific and plentiful as well as clearly connected to the thesis with well planned organization and good coherence. Read the Lecture on "Writing a Literary Analysis" carefully in in preparation for writing your paper, no matter which option you choose for your paper.

you MAY NOT use outside sources. Do NOT read anything on the internet about this book or even about writing a literary analysis.

Paper Options:

Option #1.1 - Using The Alchemist,write a simple literary analysis which argues for your interpretation of Coelho's theme. Show how one of the following literary elements--characters, setting, plot, symbols, or point of view--support your interpretation. Be sure your thesis is properly limited to focus your paper. Please be sure to give plenty of specific quoted evidence from the text; also be sure to properly document all quoted material from Coelho's text. Last, be sure to add a Works Cited entry for the novel.

Option #1.2 -- Using The Alchemist, write a character analysis of Coelho's protagonist, Santiago. While it is important to read the "Writing a Literary Analysis," it will also be helpful to use the "Writing a Character Analysis" lecture to analyze the character thoroughly. Then, using this information, show how this character's qualities/ motivations/decisions reveal Coelho's message (theme). Please be sure to give plenty of specific quoted evidence from the text; also be sure to properly document all quoted material from Coelho's text. Last, be sure to add a Works Cited entry for the novel.
