Tim Wise wrote in his book Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich, and Sacrificing the Future of America (2015) that America today is increasingly "under the affluence". Essentially, he suggests our society is increasingly led by those with wealth and power. He stated those without affluence is: "...subordinated to the mentality and ideology of affluence, the effect of which is to rationalize and normalize inequities, no matter how vast and how deep. The end result of all this has been to deepen the culture of cruelty, in which the conditions of the impoverished, the under-employed, and the struggling are justified as the inevitable result of inadequate effort on their part, or of cultural flaws, while the wealth and success of the rich are likewise rationalized as owing to their superior talents and value systems" (pg. 23-24).

Write a well-constructed statement giving your agreement or disagreement with Tim Wise's assertion by illustrating your points using a population you have a professional interest (single mothers, children, immigrants, disabled, elderly, etc.). Highlight how Wise's statement might affect the possible expansion or retrenchment of social welfare programs and services for your selected group under the Trump administration. Using your text readings, web sources and other important resources, present at least two references to support your position. Use APA to format in-text citations and references.
