This final paper is intended to demonstrate your knowledge of two main goals:

• Your knowledge of the primary concepts presented in the course
• How you interpret and then initiate that knowledge and understanding in a fictional business situation

The requirements of this paper are common to the basic tasks of H.R. Professionals and/or Operations Managers. Whether your career is in H.R. or as a Manager, the tasks below are very common to both careers. Your final paper will be evaluated on a number of criteria including your demonstrated knowledge of text book concepts regarding each HRM and then, your planned and specific actions based upon your knowledge and understanding of your chosen business to address and solve that specific problem.

The Scenario:

You: Are the newly hired Human Resources Manager (HRM) of the company you’ll choose below and you report to Mr. Johnson. You’ve been hired to address issues existing within your company and that require your immediate attention.

Your Company: You decide which business you work for. In the Additional Learning Resources of Unit 1, you'll find the Sample Business Plans link. Once at the Center for Business Planning/MOOT CORP. Competition, you’ll find 28 fictional businesses starting with 2MBA, SanaSana, Fabrica, Vusion, JetFan Technology and others listed in the Internet Services (6), Services (8) and Products (9) sections. These businesses are the only options to do your final paper on. It's sug-gested that you choose a business that best suits your interests and/or general knowledge.

Your Duties: After choosing your company, awaiting your attention are five (5), Human Resource Management (HRM), tasks. HRM’s 1, 2 and 3, Job Analysis, Job Description and Recruiting, are basic to your position and thus, must be reported on. The last two, HRM 4 and HRM 5, allow you to choose two of the options and report on each as you would plan and initiate appropriate actions to address it. Here are the HRM tasks in the order they are to be presented:

HRM 1: Job Analysis: Refer to Chapter 4 for the specifics and choose one position that is referenced in your company’s summary and create a job analysis as you understand or believe the duties and responsibilities of that job are, or need to be. This position is presently vacant in your company and needs to be filled.

HRM 2: Job Description: Refer to Chapter 4 for the content and specifically Figure 4-2, for the proper format including required content of a job description for the position you have referenced in HRM 1.

HRM 3: Recruiting: Refer to Chapter 5. Using the position that you've identified in HRM 1 and 2, create a focused recruiting plan that is designed to locate and attract the most qualified applicants for your vacant position. You are not allowed to utilize temp-to-hire or headhunter firms.

HRM’s 4 and 5: (you must report on two of these four company situations)

A. Selection: Create a detailed process to determine your best applicant(s) for the position referenced in HRM’s 1, 2 and 3 above. Your process needs to include specific problems and/or other criteria that you would ask each candidate that would best demonstrate their knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) that would lead to accomplish-ing the requirements detailed in the job description.

B. Training/Development: Create a varied (multiple approaches) and detailed training/development program that will best addresses the needs and requirements of a new hire to fill the position referenced in HRM’s 1, 2 and 3.

C. Employee Wages: The candidate you want to hire is probleming the basis behind your company’s wage offer. He/she is requesting the validation as to how it was arrived at. The position opening is in Minneapolis, MN.

D. Employee Retention: Your Company has an employee turnover problem. Create a process that addresses this problem and details your specific recommendations that you propose will improve this problem.

Your Final Paper:

Instructions: As stated above, textbook knowledge coupled with your proposed actions regarding the needs of your chosen business are the basics of this final paper. The main grading component will be how you demonstrate in depth and detail, your planned actions that will correct them. Be specific with depth and detail in each your recommendations in all HRM sections. For ex, to recruit an Engineer, would the best way to source qualified applicants to advertise in the local paper, no, of course not. Critical thinking would lead you to utilize the local college engineering department job board or a website that specializes in the posting of available engineering positions.
