There are two different schemes you could use to synthesize 4-ethyl-3-heptanol using a Grignard reagent and a carbonyl-containing compound. Suppose Scheme One involves the reaction of the Grignard reagent containing more carbon atoms with the carbonyl compound containing fewer carbon atoms, and Scheme Two involves the reaction of the Grignard reagent containing fewer carbon atoms with the carbonyl compound containing more carbon atoms. (Draw organometallic compounds using single bonds to and from the ligand.)
(a) Draw the skeletal structure of the Grignard reagent from Scheme Two.
(b) Draw the skeletal structure of the carbonyl-containing compound from Scheme Two.
