Questions for Theme Analysis

2 What do the characters do to help illustrate this idea?
3. What do characters say to illustrate this idea?
4. What events take place in the story to illustrate this idea',
5. Are there any reoccurring symbols? Do these symbols support the idea or theme that you find in the work?

Writing your Essay

Fick one theme to write your analysis (question it I).

3. Draft a rough outline using the provided example below.

• You will need to provide at least two examples from the story to illustrate the theme.
• You will need one quote per body paragraph, so two quotes all together.
• You need to lead into the quote, and also comment on the quote after you quote it.

Follow the Outline

• Introduction-

o Introduce the author and title.
o A brief summary of the story. (2-3 sentences)
o State the theme you conclude from the book (thesis)
o Describe in general, how the author expresses such theme, i.e. by using characterization, symbolism, setting or conflicts, etc (this will be where you lead in to your body paragraphs

• Body-Write two paragraphs to explain how the author expresses the theme in his book. To describe each example, you need to include the following information.

o Introduce the quote or action what happened? What did the characters do to show the theme?
o What did the character say or think (quotes from the character, or the narrator)?
o Analyze the quote or action

• Conclusion

o Restate your themeitinis
o Connection to your own life of personal experience with theme
o Final thoughts of the theme.
