The Legend of Sleepy Hollow BY WASHINGTON IRVING.

We have been reading the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and we have focused on the genre of the ghost story and how elements like the setting and characters affects the story. For this particular essay, you are going to do a textual analysis of the legend and explain how these elements create the story.

In order to complete this essay, you have three different choices. You must pick one of the following in order to create your essay.

Option 1: Characters

Explain how the characters in the story contribute to the creation of the story. This particular questions deals with character analysis. You are not just giving a summary of the characters, but rather an analysis of why, and how, the characteristics of these people contribute to the development of the story.

Option 2: Setting

All ghost stories require a setting in which the story develops. Analyze the setting of the story and explain how Sleepy Hollow is the perfect place for a ghost story to persist. Remember that setting is not just the place where things happen; the people that live there also are part of the setting.

Option 3: The genre of the ghost story.

Explain how the Legend of Sleepy Hollow fits into the genre of the ghost story. For this option you will have to first define what a ghost story is and how this story fits with that. This particular questions will need clear explanation of the elements of the ghost story, and specific examples from the story to show that indeed this is a ghost story.

In this essay, we are going to focus on how you analyze the text, so avoid summary and utilize direct quotes to support your ideas. It must be 5-6 pages minimum, you may write more if you like. It must follow MLA format and a Works Cited page. You must utilize the story and a minimum of two other academic sources to support your ideas. You may use more if you need to but no less.

Focus on the following: Essay structure, thesis statement, topic/ transition sentences, quotes and analysis.

first topic about the first character: Ichabod

second topic: Katrina

Third topic: Brom Bones

fourth topic: how are they related to each other / or any other topic you would like to write about them.

conclusion(summary of the analysis of each paragraph)

each paragraph must contain a qoute or more of the auther's words . and a transition sentence to the next paragraph and analysis.

and you can add more paragraphs or characters from the story to make the essay longer
