The final paper is on a literary-studies topic of your own selection in the range of our course study.

Doing Library Research/Annotated Bibliography

1. Use the academic search engine you've been introduced to search for 3 academic articles.

2. Learn to obtain the article in the library, directly on-line, or through Furman's inter-library loan service.

3. Write an annotated bibliography of these articles (that is a bibliography with your notes of the major ideas and your comments of the article) and attach it to your final paper.

4. For the format of the bibliography, please refer to the MLA style manual or other manuals that you're familiar with.

5. Your 3 articles prepare you to write your final research paper.

6. It is strongly recommended that you tell the class certain ideas you've obtained from these articles, for example, in our symposium session.

Course Description: This is a survey course covering thousands of years of rich Chinese literary tradition in all major genres comparable to what we know of today.

We will have an overview of the major achievements while providing historical background within which the most important writers and poets developed their careers.

During the course, students are encouraged to compare and contrast Chinese literature with that of the west, or that of a tradition that students are familiar with. When we go back to history, be imaginative; when we interpret, be creative.

The overall purpose is to prepare the student to become more receptive to a whole variety of literary texts and concepts.
