The force on the gear at C differ ± 5% from its nominal value. The shaft material is made up of cold drawn steel with tensile yield strength of 36 ksi and consists of ultimate tensile strength of 58 ksi.

Determine:

a) FBD and bending moment diagrams.

b) Location of the maximum bending stress in the shaft.

c) The diameter of shaft for a 2.0 factor of safety for yielding by using the maximum shear stress theory and the distortion energy theory at the position of maximum bending stress.

d) The factor of safety for fatigue (that is, infinite life) with 95 percent reliability for the diameter determined above and at the position of the maximum bending stress.

e) Deflection of the shaft at D in the z-direction and x-direction.
