Documents I and III are both written by Europeans, but they have very different perspectives. What are Ekkehard's feelings about the Crusades? How does he describe its purpose? What about the German Annalist (the third writing)? Which group considered the pilgrims "persons who had altogether lost their wits?" How does he judge the reasons for the Crusade? What is implied in Document II, the "Letter from a Crusader?"

The king of England described in Document IV was actually Richard the Lionheart, who fought against Saladin, the Turkish sultan, in the Third Crusade. How does Beh-el-din, the official from Jerusalem, describe King Richard's conduct? Can the his actions be justified?
