The Caribbean region is known for its vulnerability to natural disasters including flooding and hurricanes. It is therefore important that necessary measures are taken and relevant policies implemented to reduce the effects of these disasters on the lives of individuals. More specifically, it is important to ensure that policies and measures address the specific needs and vulnerabilities of males and females as they are affected by natural disasters differently. Disaster risk management refers to "The systematic management of administrative decisions, organization, operational skills and capacities to implement policies, strategies and coping capacities of the society and communities to lessen the impacts of natural hazards and related environmental and technological disasters" (UN-ISDR,2003).
