Social Welfare Policy - Legislative Brief Presentation

Each student will give a 15-minute presentation on their final project assignment. Students will either present independently or in a small group if more than one student tracked the same bill.

Students who are completing a portfolio, may use it to present to the class; students who are completing a traditional term paper must create 7-10 power point slides for their presentation. Each student in a group must participate orally in the presentation.

The presentation should address the following 6 points:

1. What was the social problem addressed in the bill? What evidence suggests the problem needed a legislative response? Did the sponsor of the bill have a good definition of the problem?

2. What is the proposed solution to the problem? What are the main services, benefits, administrative regulations that the policy is promoting as a response to the problem.

3. A brief overview of the legislative process for your bill. Was it voted out of committee? Did it reach the governor's office for signature? Were your personal legislators supportive of it, or not, and what was their reasoning? If the bill died, why was there no action on the bill? Were your personal state legislators (Representative and Senator) in favor of the bill? Why, or why not? [Each student must give their own legislators' perspectives on the bill].

4. Is the community in agreement how the problem was defined by legislators? Are they in agreement of how the bill addresses the problem? Where is there consensus and/or disagreement?

5. What is your perspective on the bill as a response to the problem? Do you think it will solve the problem? Would you vote for/against the bill?

6. What did you learn from participating in/observing the legislative process? What were the satisfying aspects of the process and what did you findchallenging? (Each student in a group must orally address this question in the presentation).
