After re-reading the Declaration of Independence and comparing it to what you have posted I would say that you may be digging into the writing of Thomas Jefferson deeper than needed. I tried to see the possibility of all three types ethos, pathos, and logos, but still really only see the existence of logos. I guess it comes from the fact that when this was written the time for appealing to the emotions of the crown had long passed. The purpose of this document is to state simply the facts leading up to the separation from England. I can therefore see the logos of the writing as the main and possibly sole style here.

I suppose that to make this assertion you have to look at the audience of the writing, basically the King of England. In doing so it makes it easier to understand that the writing was not a plea to emotions nor an attempt to build up credibility with the crown. It was a declaration of the colonies' separation from said crown and included fact after fact about why it was happening. So if I had chosen this as my essay, I would focus on that.

Obviously all of this is simply my opinion, and you can take from it what you wish. Sometimes critique is even harder when applying it to a live person.....lol. Keep up the great work and good luck with the essay.

The ability of a new nation to come together is difficult to say the least. For its founders to be successful, they would have to appeal to its future constituents through a multitude of areas including logic, emotion and bit of persuasion. I agree with your thesis that these words reached readers in different ways and look forward to reading more on your critical evaluation. Do you believe that the birth of the nation would have been less successful if we had a less charismatic group of leaders? It is such an important piece that has shaped the foundation of our lives.
