Reflective Assignment.

On completion of the Group Assignment, you are required to submit an individual assignment reflecting on your learning from having undertaken the class as a whole and the case study group work and your previous work experience in particular. The individual reflection should clearly demonstrate your emergent and deeper understanding of how you see yourself as a strategic manager on the basis of what you have learned from undertaking SAE. The process logics in the ‘Strategic Manager' textbook gives you a first understanding of the many ways in which the theory expects a strategist to think and act. You could apply this to yourself and explain what additional understanding and insight with regard to how you now can think and act as a strategist on the basis of what you have learned from the SAE class.

The Assignment Brief:

You are required, individually, to write a 1,000 word reflective essay on how you now see yourself as a (future) strategist and what additional ways of thinking and acting you have gained as a result of your experience of studying SAE and undertaking the group assignment tasks.

In the essay, you should explain your initial understanding of yourself as a strategist and how your understanding is now more sophisticated as a result of working through the SAE materials. To evaluate yourself, you can look at the underlying basic assumptions of each theoretical approach and how you relate to them, and / or draw on the various process logics in the ‘Strategic Manager' textbook. You may invoke learning situations from additional readings, other classes you have been through, or professional situations and previous work experience, and weave these into the learnings in SAE. You should also consider how what you have learnt about yourself as a strategist could be applied to other contexts, for example in your professional practice or business.

Note that reflection is not about regurgitation of theory; it is about personal understanding and making sense of theory and its role in practice for you, which has arisen as a result of having undertaken SAE. We are not therefore interested in a reiteration/paraphrase of theory - in effect you explaining a theory back to us - in this assignment but in your understanding and insights. The personal reflection should be about you.

Assignment Assessment:

The format of the assignment is an "essay" and as such, does not warrant a cold and objective reporting style complete with establishment of facts and citations. You may of course quote authors but these should be in the nature of appreciation of insights offered, rather than as reportage of theories.

Avoid discussion on your group's interactions in undertaking the group assignment; the task in this assignment is to reflect on your evolving understanding of yourself as a (future) strategist, not to reflect on teamwork. However you may want to refer to some of the group discussions if they show how your understanding of strategic analysis and evaluation and your role as a strategist enabled your group to progress in their understanding of the case, or to draw new and powerful strategic implications.

For an individual reflective essay to fall into the "excellent" range, it would require:

- Demonstration of a sophisticated understanding of what it takes to think and act like a strategist by referring to specific theoretical approaches and to the process logic of these approaches in particular and / or the basic assumptions underlying these approaches;

- Clear evidence of reflection on the group case study work and / or previous work experience as part of describing how the student has developed an enhanced understanding of doing strategic management; and

- A clear structure and effective and persuasive communication with adequate referencing.
