Note that this paper does not require further reading or research. Instead, concentrate on choosing a topic and materials that interest you, and then analyze word choices (and/or image choices) carefully.

Choose two magazine article advertisements for cosmetics (including face masks), from at least 10 years apart. Read them carefully and explain what and how each advertisements tries to sell. What claims are made? Who do you think the intended audience is, and why do you think this? How does the description fit (or not fit) with the findings of Kathy Peiss's article on cosmetics? Your answer should take into account the historical contexts. Note that your essay should discuss the texts, not your personal views of these cosmetics. With your essay, include a printout of BOTH advertisements.

Does each paragraph explain or clarify an idea?

Are the ideas proposed particularly original or convincing?

Does the paper employ proper formatting, fall within appropriate length guidelines, and include correct citations for scholarly source(s)?
