SCENARIO-BASED PROBLEM - FIXING DIS-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIC CHEMICAL DATA

Ester has a PhD in chemistry and she recently got a new job at a chemical company "Functional Compounds". Functional Compounds have large amount of chemicals which are all listed in their database, however recently their software had a glitch/problem. Upon fixing the software, some chemical names, structures, reaction descriptions and other data have disappeared or have appeared in the wrong sections. Ester's task is to sort out chemical database. Listed below are some of the mistakes she noticed and must therefore correct.

Ester's first task is to sort out compounds with the same molecular formula but different chemical properties. She knows that there can be 10 different compounds with formula C5H10, but the database seems to have only 4 out of 10 correct entries. She also noticed that the IUPAC names have disappeared.

Q1. (a) Draw out all of the possible structural (not geometric) isomers. Next to each isomer, write the correct iupac name. Identify the correct structures by drawing them again along with the missing ones.

Database entries for C5H10:

(b) How many, of the 10 isomers, have geometric isomers? Identify any such molecule by giving its IUPAC name (or its structure) from the table above.

(c) Draw and clearly label the Z and E isomers from part (b).

Q2. Complete the table below to provide the following information on each of the seven reactions shown in the scheme:

  • name the type of reaction, choosing from this list: acid/base, addition, combustion, condensation, elimination, substitution.
  • name the functional groups that the starting material and product belong to.

Q3. What is the correct iupac name?

The next task involved large organic compound, missing a few data points: functional groups, molecular formula and molecular weight.

Q4. (a) name the four functional groups present in the molecule below.

(b) The molecular formula of this organic compound is:

CxHyOz

X =

Y =

Z =

(c) The molecular weight of this organic compound is:

(Note: H = 1.01 g/mol, C = 12.01 g/mol and O = 16.00 g/mol).
